
OMAHA, NEB. - Sophomore Megan Howard (Elkhart, Iowa/North Polk) and junior Hannah Redenius (Ida Grove, Iowa/Battle Creek-Ida Grove) each recorded a double-double as AIB upset 16th-ranked College of Saint Mary, 85-81, in overtime Thursday night in Omaha, Neb.
Redenius scored the first two pints of the second half to give AIB its biggest lead of the game at 45-30. The Eagles held a 53-41 advantage after a jumper by Howard with 14:05 remaining before the Flames responded with 14-4 run over the next 4:37 to cut the lead to two, 57-55. College of Saint Mary would regain the lead at 69-66 with 3:27 left in the game. The Eagles answered with a 7-0 run to go up 73-69 with just over two minutes remaining. The Flames tied the score at 73 with 1:20 left and neither team would score in the closing minute of the game.
In the extra frame, College of Saint Mary opened the scoring, followed by six-straight points from the Eagles for a 79-75 lead with three minutes remaining in the extra session. The Flames tied the score at 79 before junior Caitlin Hagarty (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) made a pair of free throws to give AIB the lead once again (81-79) with 2:17 to go in the game. College of Saint Mary made a pair of free throws with 1:14 remaining, to tie the game once again. A three-pointer by Hagarty followed, giving the Eagles an 84-81 advantage with 51 seconds left. Junior Ashley Vratny (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) had a clutch steal and made one of two free throws with 32 seconds left to seal the victory.
AIB trailed 28-19 with 9:10 remaining in the first half before ending the half on a 24-2 run, including eight points from Redenuis and seven points from Vratny to lead 43-30 at the break. The Eagles (6-7, 0-3 MCC) shot 50 percent (18-of-36) from the floor in the first half.
The Eagles shot 41 percent (30-of-74) from the floor for the game and made 78 percent (21-of-27) of their free throws. College of Saint Mary shot 37 percent (27-of-74) from the field, including 24 percent (7-of-29) from behind the three-point arc. The Flames shot 87 percent (20-of-23) from the free-throw line.
Hagarty finished with 17 points and five rebounds. Freshman Katira Young (Houston, Texas/North Shore) added 16 points and eight rebounds while Vratny contributed 10 points and a game-high eight assists.
Senior Kelsey Heese led College of Saint Mary with 21 points. Junior Karyn Bixler added a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
AIB returns to action Saturday (Dec. 17) as they play host to NCAA Division III opponent Central College. The non-conference matchup is set for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
